Norma Kamali Launches 3D Fashion/E-commerce Site
Norma Kamali has always been an iconoclast; she made her name in the ’70s with the ingenious “sleeping bag” coat and her jumpsuits made of silk parachutes. (She also designed Farrah Fawcett’s famous red swimsuit, launched a collection for eBay in 2009 and started designing a line for Walmart before it was cool for designers to go “mass.”) So of course she showed her playful Spring 2012 collection not on a runway, but in a 3D video, handing out pairs of cat-eyed paper glasses to editors during her presentation yesterday.
The designer was inspired by filmmaker Warner Herzog’s 3D documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams. “The minute I saw the texture of the fabric on the shirts [in the film],” she said, “I was obsessed with doing a 3D fashion video.”
The video was fun — models leaping and shimmying against a white background to jazz singer Imelda May’s “All for You” — as were the clothes: go-go fringed shifts in tangerine, sequined figure-hugging dresses in gold and silver and lots of stripes and polka dots. Of course, Kamali included several of her beloved swimsuits — sexy cut-out one-pieces in gold or a shimmery turquoise lamé.
The presentation coincides with the launch of normakamali3d.com, which debuts at noon today. Shoppers who want the full experience can sign up for 3D glasses on Kamali’s Facebook page (more than 16,000 have requested a pair),Massager, or you can pick them up at the designer’s flagship store in New York City. “Fashion and technology are both moving so quickly,” says the designer. “With all the new technology you can’t just send styles down the runway [anymore]. There are so many ways to tell the story.”
Luxury department store Neiman Marcus, which also owns Bergdorf Goodman, reported a 17 percent increase in quarterly operating profit on Tuesday as high-end shoppers’ growing willingness to pay full price for designer dresses, shoes and handbags sent sales soaring.
Downing said that while many designers drew on sports influences, fashion for the warmer months next year kept a ladylike chic. “There’s this very dressed up spirit throughout,” he said.Peplum waists — a flared ruffle attached to the waist of dresses, jackets and tops — were popular, shown by designers including Karen Walker, Vera Wang, Rodarte and Badgley Mischka and many collections featured blazers.
